Why MT output alone isn't publishable

Fluent-sounding output that's factually wrong
is more dangerous than obvious machine translation.

Modern machine translation has improved dramatically — but it still fails in ways that are hard to detect without a subject-matter linguist. For government, legal, and medical content, those failures carry real consequences.

MT output looks fluent but fails on meaning

Machine translation produces grammatically correct sentences with wrong meaning. Fluency errors bypass automated QA and fool non-expert reviewers. The text reads naturally — but says something different from the source.

Legal and medical terms require human verification

AI hallucinations in legal or medical MT output aren't theoretical — they happen. Drug names, legal obligations, and dosage instructions are exactly the kind of high-stakes content where MT makes confident, undetectable errors.

USCIS and courts don't accept unreviewed MT output

Certified translations require a human translator to sign a competency declaration. MT output alone doesn't qualify — regardless of how good it looks. Our Certified MTPE service provides the required declaration after full human review.

Service levels

Choose the right level of post-editing
for your content and use case.

Light Post-Editing (LPE)

Correct obvious errors, improve fluency, fix terminology. The MT output is kept where it is acceptable — human effort is applied only where errors are clear. Best for internal documents and informational content where near-human quality is sufficient.

  • Obvious error correction
  • Fluency improvement
  • Terminology alignment
  • Best for: internal content, informational pages
From $0.07 / word

Full Post-Editing (FPE)

Full human review to professional translation quality. The post-editor may rewrite extensively if needed. The output meets the same quality standard as human translation. Required for published content, patient communications, legal filings, and anything regulatory.

  • Professional translation quality output
  • Full meaning and accuracy review
  • Style and register correction
  • Best for: published content, patient materials, legal
From $0.12 / word
Who uses MTPE

When volume is high and quality matters —
but starting from scratch isn't efficient.

Government Document Backlogs

High-volume document backlogs where human translation from scratch would take months. MTPE delivers faster at lower cost while meeting quality standards.

Title VI Compliant

Healthcare Patient Communications at Scale

Appointment reminders, discharge instructions, and patient portal content at volume — reviewed for medical accuracy by clinical language specialists.

HIPAA Compliant

Legal Discovery Document Sets

Large foreign-language document sets in legal discovery translated at scale and reviewed by legal linguists for accuracy and admissibility.

Court Accepted

Website Content Updates

High-frequency content updates on multilingual sites where full translation on every update isn't cost-effective — MTPE keeps quality high at lower cost.

From submission to delivery

Four steps from MT output to publishable translation.

We work with your existing MT output — no need to re-run the translation.

1

Submit MT output + source document

Provide both the original source document and the MT output in any common format. Include the MT system used and any specific terminology or style requirements.

Most file formats accepted
2

Review by subject-matter specialist

An ATA-certified linguist with subject-matter expertise (legal, medical, government, technical) reviews the MT output against the source, correcting errors at the contracted service level.

ATA-certified, subject-matter matched
3

Corrections + terminology alignment

Terminology is aligned to any glossary or style guide you provide. Corrections are tracked using industry-standard CAT tools so you receive a complete change log with the final document.

Frequently asked questions

MTPE questions, answered.

What MT systems do you accept (Google Translate, DeepL, Amazon, Azure)?
We accept MT output from any system — Google Translate, DeepL, Amazon Translate, Microsoft Azure Translator, ModernMT, or any other. You provide both the source document and the MT output; our post-editors work from the comparison. We do not require you to use a specific MT system or share access to your MT API.
Is MTPE output certifiable for USCIS?
Yes — with our Certified MTPE service. After full post-editing to professional translation quality, an ATA-certified linguist signs a certification statement declaring they are competent in both languages and that the translation is complete and accurate. This certification meets USCIS requirements. Note: standard LPE or FPE without certification does not qualify for USCIS submission.
How is MTPE different from proofreading?
Proofreading reviews a translation against itself for consistency, spelling, and grammar. MTPE reviews the translated output against the original source document for accuracy of meaning. This is a critical distinction: a proofreader cannot detect cases where the MT translation is fluent but factually wrong, because they are not comparing it to the source. MTPE always involves both the source and the MT output.
Do you provide a change log of edits?
Yes, on request. We can deliver the final document alongside a tracked-changes version showing every edit made during post-editing. This is useful for organizations that want to understand where their MT engine is underperforming, or for audit documentation in regulated industries.
What turnaround time should I expect?
Standard turnaround is 48 hours for most projects under 10,000 words. Large-volume projects (legal discovery sets, full website content, training libraries) are scheduled with a project plan. Rush service is available for time-sensitive filings or compliance deadlines — contact us with your specific deadline and we will confirm feasibility before accepting the project.
