Why court document translation requires legal expertise

An inaccurate translation of a criminal record or court judgment can affect admissibility — and outcomes.

Court documents require translators who understand both legal systems — the foreign civil law framework the document was issued under, and the US common law framework where it will be submitted.

Immigration cases hinge on accurate criminal record translations

Immigration cases often involve translated foreign criminal records or police clearance certificates. An inaccurate translation can affect USCIS admissibility determinations, visa approvals, and immigration court outcomes. Accuracy is not optional.

Civil law terminology doesn't map directly to US common law

Foreign court documents use civil law terminology that has no direct equivalent in US common law. Our legal translators understand both legal systems and translate concepts accurately rather than word-for-word — preserving legal meaning.

An apostille authenticates — it doesn't translate

Many clients confuse apostilles with certified translations. An apostille authenticates a document's origin and the official's signature. A certified translation renders the content into English. USCIS and courts often require both — and they serve different purposes.

Frequently asked questions

Court document translation questions, answered.

Are your translations accepted in federal immigration court?

Yes. Our certified translations are accepted by US federal immigration courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), USCIS, and state courts. Each translation includes a signed translator competency declaration that meets federal evidentiary standards. We have produced translations for hundreds of immigration court proceedings without a certification-based challenge.

What's the difference between an apostille and a certified translation?

An apostille is an authentication certificate attached to a document that verifies the document's origin and the authority of the issuing official. It does not translate the document. A certified translation renders the foreign-language content into English with a translator competency declaration. USCIS and courts often require both — for different purposes.

I need a police clearance certificate translated — is that the same?

Yes. Police clearance certificates, criminal background certificates, and certificates of good conduct are among the most common court documents we translate for immigration purposes. They are processed the same way — upload the document, we assign a legal translator, and deliver a certified translation.

My custody agreement is in Spanish — can you translate it for a US court filing?

Yes. Child custody orders and agreements in Spanish are one of our most common legal translation requests. Our translators are experienced with custody agreements from Mexico, Central America, South America, and Spain — each of which uses different family court terminology and document formats.

What types of court documents do you translate?

We translate all types of foreign court documents including criminal records, police certificates, court judgments, custody orders, restraining orders, adoption decrees, probate documents, civil court filings, and judicial correspondence. If it was issued by a foreign court or law enforcement authority, we can translate it.
