The Stakes

Garifuna speakers deserve to be understood — accurately.

Garifuna is spoken by communities from Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua — and by a growing diaspora across the United States, including New York, Los Angeles, Houston, and New Orleans. Because it is a rare, endangered language, qualified Garifuna linguists are hard to find. A missing or inaccurate interpretation in a courtroom, hospital, or school isn't a formality — it can change the outcome of someone's case, care, or education.

Where accurate Garifuna matters most

  • Court hearings & legal proceedings for Garifuna speakers
  • Medical appointments, consent forms & discharge instructions
  • School meetings, IEPs & Title VI language access
  • Asylum & immigration interviews and declarations
  • Community, social services & disaster response

Honoring the Garinagu

A living language, carried by drums and memory

The Garinagu — the Garifuna people — are an Afro-Indigenous people descended from West and Central African, Island Carib, and Arawak ancestors. After their 1797 exile from the island of St. Vincent (Yurumein), they built vibrant communities along the Caribbean coast of Central America, and today across the United States.

In 2001, UNESCO proclaimed the Garifuna language, dance, and music a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Its drumming, punta rhythms, and call-and-response singing carry generations of memory that no dictionary can hold.

Every accurate translation and interpreted conversation helps keep an endangered language alive.
We work only with fluent, culturally grounded Garifuna linguists — people who honor the heritage behind the words.
Garifuna Settlement Day (November 19) is celebrated across Belize and the diaspora — we're proud to serve this community year-round.
